Selection Process

The Portland Monthly magazine invites all doctors, physician assistants, registered nurses, and CAM providers in Multnomah, Washington, and Clackamas Counties to participate in selecting the winners. After logging in with her or his medical license number, each participant can name up to three nominees in multiple medical specialties. Voters are directed to name peers to whom they would entrust the health of their own family members.

In the second round of vetting, Portland Monthly confirms that top vote recipients are properly certified by the corresponding medical licensing board (the Oregon Medical Board for Portland acupuncture practitioners, for instance.) Finally, once the top 5% of vote getters is determined, an independent, anonymous panel of nurse practitioners and doctors evaluates each finalist individually, reviewing patient satisfaction surveys, communication skills, education, and other evidence-based criteria. To make it to the final list, a healthcare professional must truly stand out in his or her field.
