Michael Guida, Amma Therapist, LMT

Michael Guida is a Licensed Massage Therapist, Certified Amma Therapist, Diplomate Asian Bodywork Therapy, Certified Wholistic Nutritionist, T’ai Chi Instructor, and Certified Triathlon Coach in Portland Oregon

I practice both Swedish style massage and a Wholistic form of Asian bodywork called Amma Therapy, which is rooted in Traditional Chinese Medicine. My practice philosophy emphasizes the use of minimally invasive treatment techniques and achievable lifestyle modifications to help patients reach their wellness goals. Though I will direct patients to Western care when necessary, I believe in encouraging a gentler, more natural path to balance and health. I strive to meet each patient “where they are,” working with them to define their goals and develop an optimal treatment plan. I am careful to avoid overwhelming patients with too many recommendations if a slower approach is needed, and am always mindful of the daily challenges we all face in managing our nutrition and wellbeing.

As an Amma Therapist, I combine bodywork with nutritional, and lifestyle recommendations to treat a wide range of health conditions, including, but not limited to:

  • Musculoskeletal injuries or disorders
  • Common illnesses (cold, flu, etc)
  • Headaches/Migraines
  • Menstrual conditions
  • Asthma
  • Blood sugar imbalances
  • Digestive disorders
  • Allergies
  • Sleep disorders
  • Anxiety/depression
  • Post-operative care (to minimize scarring and accelerate healing)

I also offer traditional Swedish massage, which facilitates relaxation, relieves musculoskeletal pain, promotes exercise recovery, and can be used for a host of other conditions.

Education and affiliations

Originally from the east coast, I was formally trained at the New York College for Wholistic Health Education and Research, and became licensed as a massage therapist in 1995. Since then, I have split my time between clinical practice and instruction, teaching classes in massage, Amma Therapy, Chinese Medicine, and T’ai Chi. I moved to Portland in 2011 to join the faculty of the Wellspring School for Healing Arts, teaching in their Amma Therapy and Wholistic Nutrition programs and instructing T’ai Chi, and other community wellness classes.

Awards and Recognition as a Massage Therapist

• Recognized in Natural Awakenings magazine as one of Portland’s favorite Massage
Therapist/Bodyworker in 2015

Outside of work
I love staying active and being in the outdoors and have passion for mountain biking, rock climbing, triathlon, hiking. I like giving back to our natural landscapes and work with several groups to build and maintain trails and natural areas. Building community is really important to me. That was one of the things that drew me to moving to Portland.

My patients say

“Michael was a pillar of inspiration, a valuable resource of information and a huge support system through Amma therapy, coaching and massage when I was recovering from a massive spinal cord surgery that left me weak, in pain and forced to start over from scratch. He helped me every step of the way. With his help, I was strong, confident and happy.” ~LC

“I can honestly say that Michael’s massage was the best massage I have ever had. I’m quite picky and at times, with other massage therapists, I have wanted to get off the table and leave. That never crossed my mind with Michael’s treatment” ~Dr. MZ – Chiropractor

“Michael is a real “people person”. He takes the time to listen to his clients whether they are massage clients or athlete clients. I have been on both sides and always feel good about myself whether physically or mentally after time with Michael.” ~ MG

“Michael is truly the best massage therapist, hands down. His approach to therapy is unlike any practitioner I have ever been to, in that he comes from a place of true mind/body wellness. Simply put, he treats the whole person, not just an acute symptom. Michael treated me during both of my pregnancies and I can honestly say, there is no one else I would have trusted.” ~ TS

“I am a massage therapist myself, and I have been getting massages from Michael for 12+ years. There are many good massage therapists out there but Michael Guida is definitely in the “exceptional” category. He is very knowledgeable about the body and knows exactly where to work and how to treat the complaint with great results every time. Michael has an amazing gift and gets my highest praise and recommendation!” ~ TW – Massage Therapist
