Becoming a new mom is an incredible and rewarding experience, but it can also feel overwhelming with so many new things to learn and countless products to choose from. To help ease the transition into motherhood, I’ve put together a list of my top five product recommendations that have been tried and tested by moms just like you. These essentials are designed to make your postpartum experience more comfortable and manageable, so you can focus on what matters most—bonding with your baby.
1. Padsicles: Soothing Relief for Postpartum Recovery
Padsicles are a wonderful way to provide relief from pain and swelling in the perineal area after childbirth. These cooling, absorbent pads can be placed in the freezer and worn discreetly under clothing. You can choose to purchase pre-made padsicles like those from HoneyPot, which are designed specifically for postpartum recovery, or you can make your own using the DIY recipe below.
2. Milk Collector: Effortlessly Save Every Drop
The Haakaa milk collector is a game-changer for breastfeeding moms. This small, manual breast pump is perfect for catching any let-down milk while breastfeeding on the other side. It’s easy to use, requires no batteries or electricity, and helps you save every precious drop of milk for later use.
3. Water Bottle with Wide Straw: Stay Hydrated with Ease
Hydration is crucial during the postpartum period, especially if you’re breastfeeding. A water bottle with a wide straw makes it easy to sip throughout the day without having to tilt your head back—a simple convenience that can make a big difference when you’re holding your baby.
4. Nipple Butter: Natural Relief for Sore Nipples
Breastfeeding can be challenging, especially when you’re dealing with sore or cracked nipples. Nipple butter is a natural, safe, and effective way to soothe and moisturize sore nipples. Made from ingredients like coconut oil, shea butter, and beeswax, it keeps your skin soft and supple. Plus, it’s safe for your baby to ingest during breastfeeding.
5. Mental Health Support: Say Yes to Help
Your mental health is just as important as your physical health, especially during the postpartum period. Whether it’s talking to a counselor or leaning on a good friend, having a support system in place can make all the difference. Always say yes when someone offers help, and ask for it when they don’t, even if you’re sure you can handle things on your own. You deserve a break and to be doted on like the amazing queen you are for having just birthed a human.
Bonus Tip: Customize Your Postpartum Essentials
Every mom and baby are different, so it’s important to find what works best for you. These products are just a starting point, and as you navigate your postpartum journey, you may discover other items that suit your unique needs. Remember, taking care of yourself is just as important as caring for your baby.
Padsicle Recipe: A DIY Guide to Postpartum Comfort
Padsicles are an excellent way to soothe and heal your perineal area after childbirth. Here’s how to make them at home:
Ingredients:
- Spray bottle
- Gallon Ziplock Bag, Tupperware, or Glass baking dish with a lid
- Parchment paper
- 6 quarts of distilled water
- 30 overnight/super maxi pads
- Pure Aloe Vera Gel (optional—choose a dye and fragrance-free version)
- Postpartum sitz bath herbal blend:
- 1/2 cup comfrey root
- 1/2 cup calendula flowers
- 1/4 cup lavender flowers
- 1/4 cup witch hazel bark
Instructions:
1. Bring the distilled water to a boil.
2. Add the postpartum sitz bath herbs to the boiling water. Stir, cover, and remove from heat. Let the herbs steep for 20 minutes.
3. Strain the herbs and fill a spray bottle with the tea. Store the remaining tea in a pitcher or mason jars in the fridge for your peri bottle and sitz baths.
4. Unwrap each pad.
5. If using aloe vera, spread a thin layer on the pad using a butter knife or spatula.
6. Spray each pad with the tea concentrate where it will contact your perineum. Dampen the pad, but don’t saturate it to maintain its absorbency.
7. Wrap the pad in parchment paper and place it in your chosen container. Once the container is full, freeze it until ready to use.
8. When you’re ready to use a padsicle, unwrap it and let it thaw for about 3 minutes before applying. Use 2-5 padsicles daily for the first two weeks postpartum.
Important Note: Be selective about the products you use for menstrual care, especially postpartum. The tissues of the vulva, vagina, and perineum are particularly sensitive during healing. Avoid products containing chlorine, plastics, perfumes, dyes, and other toxic ingredients that can be absorbed into the bloodstream. Always read the ingredients list carefully—some products marketed as “natural” or “free & clear” can be misleading.
