Philosophy of Care

paula mader

I believe true health is multifaceted: body, mind, and spirit working in harmony. I implement this model by recognizing that long-term recovery requires addressing the nervous system, immune system, and environment. My role is not only to treat illness, but to help patients understand their bodies and provide them with tools to support their own healing.

This philosophy comes from both my training and personal journey. Having faced chronic illness myself, I know the fear and uncertainty it brings. I know what it feels like to be at your lowest point, questioning whether recovery is possible. Those experiences shape my practice today: grounded in compassion, patience, and commitment.

Clinically, I combine evidence-based medicine with flexibility and creativity. If something brings healing and improves quality of life, it is worthwhile, whether conventional, natural, or unexpected. My guiding principle is always to use the least toxic, most effective interventions.

To me, this is the essence of naturopathic medicine: restoring the body’s innate ability to heal. When we align with the body’s inherent intelligence, recovery unfolds with greater ease and flow.

Clinical Focus Areas

I specialize in the care of patients with complex, chronic, and overlapping conditions. My work often focuses on:

  • Lyme disease and coinfections
  • Mold illness
  • Chronic Inflammatory Response Syndrome (CIRS) and Biotoxin Illness
  • Environmental toxicity — including heavy metal exposure, chemical and occupational exposures, water contaminants, and sensitivities to environmental factors such as EMFs
  • Mast cell activation syndrome (MCAS)/histamine intolerance
  • Postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome (POTS)
  • Fibromyalgia
  • Autoimmune Disorders
  • Morgellon’s
  • Chronic fatigue syndrome (ME/CFS)
  • Long-haul COVID
  • Neurodegenerative conditions
  • Viral infections — including EBV, CMV, HSV, and other chronic viral conditions
  • Persistent infections — such as chronic sinus infections, urinary tract infections, and genitourinary infections
  • Gastrointestinal care — including functional, structural, and infectious conditions such as IBS, SIBO, constipation, reflux, celiac disease, IBD, gallstones, dysbiosis, parasitic infections, and persistent candida infections.

I also place special emphasis on:

  • Women’s health and reproductive health — including menstrual concerns, fertility support, perimenopause, and menopause
  • Endocrine health — including sex hormone support (HRT), thyroid disorders, and adrenal function

At the core of my work is the goal of restoring cellular function when the body has become dysregulated. This means reducing the total body burden of infections and toxins, identifying underlying dysfunctions, and rebuilding resilience so the body can return to balance.

Although my primary focus is on these complex conditions, I also provide general naturopathic medical care, supporting patients with a broad range of health concerns and wellness goals.

  • Muscle testing – a hands-on assessment that uses subtle changes in muscle tone to provide insights into nervous system function, stress responses, and potential imbalances in the body

Outside of Work

I grew up in Detroit and later lived in Seattle before settling in Portland. Outside the clinic, I enjoy staying active in nature through mountain biking, hiking, backpacking, rafting, paddle boarding, yoga, and basketball. I also have a lifelong love of music. Growing up in Motown sparked a passion for live music that continues to be an important part of my life today.
