Facilitating Liberated & Joyful Movement

Heather Day-Melgar

Teaching Style

Heather Day-Melgar is an instructor of yogic based mindful movement, with a focus on grounding stillness and presence, accessibility, nervous system care, strength, and stability. She began a dedicated yoga practice in 2015 and completed a 200-hour certification in 2017. She has consistently continued to build expertise through workshops, study, and a solid personal practice.

Her goal is to help students feel liberated and joyful in their movements. She hopes to help build a new understanding and relationship to students’ bodies. She is very interested in the human place in the natural world, and believes slow, mindful movement brings us closer to what our ancient nervous systems want and need, as our modern world makes unreasonable demands of our minds and bodies.

Heather believes in the life-changing power of breath, mantra, and movement to aid in the healing journey of trauma, anxiety, substance abuse, and injury recovery. She is always looking for ways to make yoga as accessible and equitable as possible. She weaves together mindful meditation, pranayama, yogic principles and poses, storytelling, seasonal themes, and modern functional movement. Her yin classes are quiet and restful, and her hatha classes include long warmups and cool downs, with just the right amounts of challenge and quiet mindfulness.

Education and Background

Heather holds an M.S. in geography and a B.A. in psychology. She has 13 years of medical social work and trauma informed care experience. She looks to polyvagal theory and Jungian psychology to inform her movement class instruction and themes. Heather currently specializes in the urban ecosystem, climate change, and nature education, and leads monthly native plant walks and hikes around the PNW.

With a background in environmental science, nature is her muse, and her teaching reflects the practice of  reweaving the relationship with land. She has 2 decades of experience leading community healing circles, gatherings, and seasonal ritual. Heather has published research and poetry, and is currently writing her first science fiction fantasy novel.
