Joe EgnotI’m an Acupuncturist and Massage Therapist licensed in Oregon by the OMB and OBMT, and practice here at Heart Spring Health in Portland. With massage therapy, I’ve helped patients manage and overcome acute and chronic pain for over a decade in Texas, Oregon, and British Columbia using muscle-specific, deep and focused treatment. Beginning in 2022, I practiced acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine in British Columbia, treated both orthopedic and internal conditions, and worked with each of my patients on emotional regulation to bring a better and longer lasting outcome to their specific condition and overall state of being.

Many Paths to One Wellness

My knowledge of anatomy, physiology, pathology, and manual therapies, balanced with my understanding of the body’s energetic points and pathways and how to influence them with needles, cups, moxibustion and herbs, combine for a multi-focus of Western precision and Eastern wholeness on your problem. I ask you, and listen to the information from both you and your body. Your answers shape the path I take and the tools I use with you, but I’m only a guide. The ability to heal is in you and comes from you, and if I’m doing my job right, I’m enabling you to operate at a higher level of autonomy in your own body.

Many Levels of Therapeutic Technique Operation

Pain is a far more complicated issue than what you experience locally at an injury site. It involves changes in the plasticity of the fascial network, the respiratory and vascular systems, the proprioceptive regulation in your tendons, and your brain’s unique perception of and experience of the pain. Pain can also arise from the imbalance of communication leading to excesses or deficiencies in the energetic systems of your body which need to work together to sustain the whole that is you. Your beliefs and feelings about your existence in your body can also have a profound effect on the way it feels to live in it.

Acupuncture & TCM Modalities

The acupuncture and Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) that I practice is a millennias-rich tradition that sees the body as part of, and undifferentiated from, Nature. As the seasons ebb and flow, so do the energetic currents that influence the elements within. I use the beautiful Nature metaphors of the Five Elements system to help you understand the energetic movement in your body and how it can be regulated. I use needle placement techniques influenced by the Balance Method to keep the wheel of Qi moving throughout all of your systems and treatment planning based on the Six Levels to manage the ebb and flow of pathogens and disease. Finally, I use somatic interface with the psycho-emotional and spiritual aspects of the elements at dynamic interplay within you. In TCM, physical problems always have an emotional root, and emotional problems always express themselves in the body. And in addition to needling, the tools I bring to affect change within you may involve cupping, gua sha, moxibustion, ear seeds, tui na massage, and insights on movement through Qi Gong.

Massage Modalities

The modalities I offer as a Western-style massage therapist also operate at these different levels. Myofascial release can help to reset your nerve-rich but vascular-poor fascial network. Gentle relaxation-based techniques help to regulate breathing and harmonize your vascular flow. Passive and active stretching tell your tendons what is the appropriate amount of movement for you and what is too much. And deep tissue, trigger point therapy, and neurologically focused massage all facilitate communication between your brain and muscle groups, helping your brain to process the healing messages being sent and signal resetting messages to your body accordingly.

Many Life Connecting Points Towards the Provider I am Today

My own journey as a practitioner of the healing arts began with my experience as a patient. In 2013, I was involved in a motorcycle collision with a truck that left me unable to walk unassisted for a year. Once my eight surgeries were completed, I found that the greatest aid to my total recovery was the encouraging space that friends and family held for me, and the restorative modalities of massage and acupuncture that helped me embrace my body’s own potential to reset myself and restore both my strength and my range of motion to healthy parameters.

One year after my accident, I enrolled in the Lauterstein/Conway Massage School and Clinic in Austin, TX and began practicing massage in the summer of 2015 at Studio Mantra, a combined massage and yoga studio. There I had the opportunity to help people prepare for and recover from sporting events, and to work in coordination with the space’s yoga instructors to help people improve their movement and flexibility and reduce their chronic pain. In 2017 I moved to Bend, OR, where I added the study and practice of kinesiology, deep tissue techniques, and orthopedic assessment to my modalities.

Pursuing Acupuncture Studies

The following year presented me with the life-changing opportunity to move to British Columbia, where I pursued full time acupuncture studies at Tzu Chi International College of Traditional Chinese Medicine, receiving my diploma in March of 2021. While in acupuncture school, I practiced massage therapy at a multidisciplinary clinic in downtown Vancouver: Electra Health. Just as my own experience with trauma informed my approach to rehabilitative massage, my experience with acupuncture and Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) has informed the way I conceive the relationship of a person’s physical health and potential to their mental and emotional states, and to the energetic matrix that maintains our state of balanced wellness.

A Shift To Chinese Herbal Medicine

I studied Chinese herbal medicine from 2021-2022 at Pacific Rim College in Victoria BC, and from  2022 -2025 was a Registered Acupuncturist and Traditional Chinese Medicine Practitioner in British Columbia, providing acupuncture, TCM manual therapies, and herbal medicine at clinics in Courtenay, Sidney, and Victoria BC. While in Victoria, I was also the TCM Herbal Dispensary Manager for Pacific Rim College.

Back to the United States

Since returning to Oregon in the summer of 2025 and reinstating my OBMT massage license, I have completed all the steps for transferring my Canadian acupuncture and TCM credentials to the United States, and am now Board certified by the NCBAHM, and licensed in acupuncture by the state of Oregon. I’m happy to be a provider at Heart Spring Health where I can combine my experiences from both the West and East, from structure and focus to wholeness and connection. I look forward to working with you and helping you achieve the greatest potential for freedom in your body and your whole Self.

Many Odds & Ends About Me

When not in the clinic, I have been found onstage as a multi-instrumentalist, vocalist, and songwriter with the groups Dreamsickle, Brigante, WinoVino, the Minor Mishap Marching Band, and The Carnival Band. I love being outdoors, from gardening, to volunteering at Portland’s Zenger Farm, to hiking, biking and swimming in the beautiful Pacific Northwest. I value quiet time at home, reading, meditating, cooking, and being with my wife Stefanie, an environmental scientist who is to plants and ecosystems what I try to be to people. But of course, we really just do all of this for the benefit of our beloved and one-of-a-kind tortoise-shell kitty cat, Polly.
