Optimizing Movement for Comfort, Function and Quality of Life

Tim Newton, MPT, Physical TherapistMy name is Tim, and I’m a Physical Therapist at Heart Spring Health. My approach to physical therapy combines hands-on manual interventions with pointed patient education and specific movement retraining and guidance, allowing for more efficient stress management, less pain, and more choice in daily and recreational activities.

I view each of us as athletes, and our sport is whatever movement we desire: quilting, running, soccer, computer work, watching TV. All of them involve our physical, emotional and mental capacity. As with any athlete, I see my role as helping you optimize your performance. This may include information on emotional and mental stress management, improved movement patterns to better tolerate the physical demands of an activity, a home strength program for greater resiliency, or passive manual techniques to down-regulate an over-taxed nervous system and calm irritated tissues (muscle pain, joint pain, increased tension or “tightness,” etc.).

Through engaged listening, I hope to create a partnership with you to understand your goals and, together, build a plan that accomplishes what you desire.

How I Can Support You

  • I listen first and ask questions to best understand your goals
  • Guidance on movement strategies for reduced pain and improved function
  • Manual techniques including joint mobilization, soft tissue mobilization, and nervous system down-regulation and/or facilitation
  • Taping for unloading
  • Orthotics as needed for weight-bearing control and unloading
  • Strength training for specific deficits and for more global fitness as needed
  • Balance integration and vestibular retraining (vertigo, dizziness, unsteadiness)
  • Movement-specific optimization for sport and recreation challenges
  • Kindness and caring. We are all unique. We all deserve love.

Services I Offer

Background and Education

I graduated from the University of Portland with a degree in Psychology and a Sports Medicine Certification in Athletic Training (R-ATC), and later earned my Master’s Degree in Physical Therapy (MPT). I also studied naturopathic medicine at Bastyr University for a year and interned and studied with a Seattle osteopath for more than five years. Along the way, I have become deeply interested in trauma research and how trauma impacts our integrated neural, emotional, social and muscular systems.

I played soccer at the University of Portland and professionally afterward. I’ve had the pleasure of working with a wide variety of athletes, from Olympic swimmers and skiers and future professional baseball and soccer players to 105-year-old poker players and Seahawks fans, and precocious young people as young as four.

Outside of Work

I enjoy hiking, kayaking, still playing soccer (though much slower!), reading, writing poetry, pottery, playing guitar, mountain biking, and slow walks in quiet woods. Basically, being creative.
