Diversified Chiropractic Care
Brandy b Hagan dc

Dr. Brandy “B” Hagan, DC (They/Them) is a neurodiverse and trans chiropractor at Heart Spring Health located in Portland, Oregon.

I offer chiropractic care based on guiding principles of body-autonomy, collaboration, validation, & weight-inclusivity. I practice the diversified method for chiropractic, prioritizing low force techniques, drop table, and am trained in Activator Technique® as well. I enjoy incorporating massage or manual therapy, rehabilitative exercise, and lifestyle education into treatment sessions. I look forward to working with you!

Conditions I Treat

I specialize in treating those with generalized hypermobility, Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome, and musculoskeletal impacts of MCAS and POTS. • Acute & Chronic pain

  • Muscle and tendon strains
  • Ligament sprains

What A Typical Appointment Looks Like

You can expect an initial patient visit to last 45 minutes. Approximately 15 minutes of that will include treatment. I will have familiarized myself with your intake paperwork and related documents so as to maximize the amount of treatment time for this visit. Our initial visit will include discussion surrounding your health history, signs and symptoms, and treatment options. There will be a more thorough physical exam during our first visit which may involve sensory, muscle and reflex testing. Additionally, I’ll take vital signs (at least BP and heart rate), conduct Orthopedic testing, check joint motions and muscle tension, and assess balance and gait. In terms of treatment for our first visit, my hope is to include chiropractic adjustments, massage, and discuss potential rehabilitative exercise(s).

Follow-Up Visits

During follow-up visits (also 45 minutes) we have a more condensed check-in to discuss any reactions to the initial treatment, updates in symptoms, and any other pertinent information. I will emphasize treatment during follow-up visits using chiropractic adjustments, massage or manual therapy, rehabilitative exercise, and use of various physiotherapy modalities such as laser or nerve stimulation (TENS). Adjustments, massage or manual therapy, and any physiotherapy modalities will happen in the same room, whereas we might venture to our in-house gym for rehabilitative exercise.

Treatment Progress

At times we will need to complete re-examinations/re-evaluations to check in on treatment progress, fulfill insurance parameters, and to potentially update the treatment plan. Depending on the acuity of symptoms, your schedule preferences and abilities, as well as the number of conditions and regions we’re attempting to manage, I may encourage you to come in multiple times a week or on a weekly basis. At times we may need to order advanced imaging or send a referral to another specialist provider to assist in managing care (for instance podiatrist, orthopedic specialists, naturopath, etc).

You can always expect me to ask for permission and consent prior to adjusting you. In general you can also expect me to prompt you prior to any form of touch. My hope is to instill and maintain as much comfort and trust as possible throughout our collaboration.

Education & Prior Roles

I attended Mt. Hood Community College (Gresham, OR) and Portland State University (Portland, OR) majoring in Community Health Education and Health Sciences for my undergraduate degree. I received a Doctor of Chiropractic degree in 2022 from University of Western States (Portland, OR) with an emphasis on Diversified technique, low force techniques, massage and manual therapy, as well as physical rehabilitation.

While attending graduate school I served as a Student Liaison to the American Chiropractic Association’s (ACA) Committee for Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (CEDI), as an Allies Club board member, and on the Oregon Collaborative for Integrative Medicine’s (OCIM) Student Alliance for Integrative Medicine’s (SAIM) Executive Board. During my later portion of graduate school, I interned at a local YWCA program and Cascadia Health clinic.

Prior to becoming a Chiropractor, I held various positions in the mental health and substance use recovery fields for approximately ten years, which heavily influences my approach to care today. I currently serve on the Board of Directors as Program Manager for Radical Abundance, a local thrift shop and non-profit focused on financing BIPOC bodywork and Trans or gender non-conforming affirming care.

Outside of Work

Outside of work I enjoy reading and listening to audiobooks, playing PC and board games, practicing aerial arts, and taking naps. When I’m feeling more invigorated I enjoy hiking, beachcombing, and playing volleyball. I grew up in rural Oregon, moved to Portland in my early 20’s, and consider myself both “city” and “country” folk. I enjoy music of many varieties but save a special place in my heart for punk and grunge. In 2023 I created my business Another State of Spined, LLC which reflects my love of mental health and Chiropractic puns as well as an ode to the song and documentary by Social Distortion.
