In today’s fast-paced world, nutrition plays a crucial role in maintaining optimal health. Whether you’re managing a chronic condition, improving athletic performance, or simply striving for better well-being, a registered dietitian nutritionist (RDN) can be your guide. But what exactly does a dietitian do, and how can they help you?
What Is a Dietitian?
A registered dietitian is a healthcare professional specializing in nutrition and dietetics. They are trained to assess nutritional needs, provide evidence-based recommendations, and create personalized nutrition plans that support long-term health. Dietitians must complete a rigorous education, including a bachelor’s degree in nutrition, a supervised internship spanning 9 months, and a national exam to earn their credential. They must be licensed in the required states they practice in to provide services. Many pursue additional certifications in specialized areas like functional nutrition, sports nutrition, or diabetes management.
The Role of a Dietitian at Heart Spring Health
Hi, I am Kassy Montgomery, RDN, LD, CDCES, the registered dietitian at Heart Spring Health. I am licensed in Oregon, Washington and Texas. Over the past 8 years I have earned my certificate as a diabetes care and education specialist requiring over 1000 hours of experience working with patients who have diabetes and passing a national exam.
Functional medicine focuses on identifying and addressing the root causes of health issues rather than just treating symptoms. At Heart Spring Health I play an essential role in this holistic approach by providing customized nutrition care tailored to each patient’s unique needs.
Personalized Nutrition Plans
At the first appointment, I will assess your current health and nutrition needs through comprehensive evaluation, including medical history, lifestyle factors, blood/specialty lab results, and food preferences. Together we will design an individualized nutrition plan that aligns with your health goals.
Gut Health and Digestive Support
Many chronic conditions stem from digestive issues, such as irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), leaky gut, or food sensitivities. Through our work together I will identify and manage food intolerances, recommend gut-healing foods, and support you in optimizing digestion through probiotics, prebiotics, and mindful eating strategies.
Chronic Disease Management
As a registered dietitian, I provide evidence-based nutrition therapy for conditions like diabetes, hypertension, autoimmune diseases, and metabolic disorders. By focusing on whole foods, anti-inflammatory diets, and lifestyle modifications, I help patients improve biomarkers and overall well-being.
Hormonal Balance and Metabolic Health
Hormonal imbalances can lead to fatigue, weight gain, and mood swings. I recommend foods that support thyroid health, blood sugar regulation, and adrenal function, helping patients regain energy and balance their metabolism.
Lifestyle and Behavior Change Support
Sustainable health improvements require more than just a meal plan. I coach patients on behavior change strategies, mindful eating techniques, and goal-setting to ensure long-term success. I provide ongoing support and adjustments based on progress and evolving health needs.
Why Work with a Dietitian?
Unlike generic nutrition advice, I provide a science-backed, holistic approach tailored to your specific health concerns. Whether you’re looking to heal from chronic illness, optimize your energy levels, or simply learn how to nourish your body better, working with a registered dietitian can be a game-changer.
If you’re ready to take charge of your health through nutrition, consider scheduling a consultation with me. Your body—and your future self—will thank you!
